False teachers in Colossians were gaining a foothold by introducing and importing rules and traditions from both Judaism and paganism and corrupting the purity of the Christian faith. Paul calls these man-made weeds and philosophies “shadows” and contrasts them with the truth of the Gospel which he calls “substance.” Paul wants his readers to step out of the shadows and into the substance of true faith. (Colossians 2:16-23)
